Google Pixel 5A was the last years best mid range phone easily beating it’s competitors. It was on sale for $399 here in US during thanksgiving and Christmas week.
Pixel 5A Hardware
This phone is more or less same as last years Pixel 4A 5G except some minor fixes. It has the same Snapdragon 765 chipset and 6gb RAM with 128gb storage and doesn’t come with any other configuration. Pixel 5A has a better build with a metal body compared to 4a 5G. Also new version has the IP rating for water and dust whereas Pixel 4a 5G doesn’t.
Slightly bigger Display
The Pixel 4a with 5G has a 6.2-inch OLED display (2,350 x 1,080 resolution) with 60Hz refresh rate. The Pixel 5a with 5G has 6.34-inch OLED display (2,400 x 1,080 resolution) with 60Hz refresh rate. Pixel 5A is a teensy bit larger, but not sharper looking compared to last year’s 4A. Both phones have the same pixel density of 413 ppi.
My take: the screen looks fine with deep blacks, good color reproduction and nice viewing angles. Videos and Images look great on this display. I would have loved a 90Hz refresh rate like the OnePlus Nords but it’s not like 60Hz is unusable.
This is the most meaningful feature upgrade between the Pixel 4a with 5G and Pixel 5a with 5G. Google has increased the battery from 3,885 mAh to 4,680 mAh which is an increase of 795 mAh. That nearly 800 mAh of extra battery can go a long way. In a week of medium to heavy use, I reached for the charger every day-and-a-half to two days. Unless you’re using heavy battery draining applications, the Pixel 5a with 5G is a battery champ. And by the way, an 18W faster charger is included in the box. This is not the case with last year’s Apple and Samsung phones!
No change between the cameras on the Pixel 4a with 5G and Pixel 5a with 5G. Both phones have a dual-lens camera system on the rear consisting of a 12-megapixel f/1.7 wide (OIS + EIS) and 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide lens. On the front, both phones have an 8-megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera.
Speakers in Pixel 5A
Google Pixel 5A has a 3.5mm headphone jack which is a huge plus as most phones in this era doesn’t come with headphone jack. I still have a lot of wired headphones which has better sound quality than most bluetooth headphones. Pixel 5a with 5G comes with stereo speakers. For the price if this device, it’s reasonable. They get loud and sounds decent at high volumes without rattling like many mid range phones.
Final Thoughts on Pixel 5A
The Pixel 5a with 5G is not a flagship but a very capable mid range phone. It doesn’t try to revolutionize mobile or phones. It has no flashy new features that will knock anyone’s socks off. It exists to fill in the mid-range gap between the Pixel 4a and recently released Pixel 6/6 Pro. The Pixel 5a with 5G dutifully fills this space with a robust set of gimmick-free features. For $399, it’s got all the essentials and nothing more. For most of the users, that’s all a phone needs to be which has most useful features, a stellar camera and a smooth clean operating system without any bloatware.
